Love You, Mean It: A Tribute to My Best Friend Genetta
Share
Life has a way of bringing people into our world who leave an imprint so deep that even when they’re gone, their presence is still felt in every memory, every lesson, and every moment we share. For over 30 years, Genetta was that person for me—my best friend, my sister in spirit, a mother, and an incredible force of love and light.
In my latest Rest Mama Podcast episode, I take a deep breath and open my heart to share the story of our friendship, the loss I am still learning to process, and the steps we can take to navigate grief. This episode is not just about loss—it’s about love, resilience, and honoring those who shaped us into who we are today.
Genetta: More Than a Friend, a Sister in Every Way
Friendship like ours isn’t just built on shared experiences—it’s built on deep understanding, unwavering support, and a love that surpasses time. We met decades ago, and from that moment, we were inseparable. Through every stage of life—becoming a mother, navigating challenges, celebrating wins—Genetta was always there. She was strong, wise, and always had the right words, even if they were as simple as Love you, mean it.
That phrase became more than just something she said—it became a part of her legacy. And when I founded Rest Mama, it was only fitting that her words of love and reassurance became part of my brand’s heart and soul.
Processing Grief: A Journey, Not a Destination
Losing Genetta has been one of the hardest things I’ve ever faced. The pain of losing someone who has been with you through everything is indescribable. But in this journey, I have learned that grief is not something we "get over"—it’s something we learn to carry.
In the podcast episode, I share some of the ways I’m navigating this loss, and I hope these steps can help anyone who is walking through grief:
1. Allow Yourself to Feel
Grief is messy, unpredictable, and deeply personal. There is no right or wrong way to grieve, but suppressing emotions only prolongs the pain. It’s okay to cry, to be angry, to miss them fiercely. Give yourself the space to feel.
2. Lean on Your Support System
One of the hardest things about grief is feeling like no one else understands your pain. But you don’t have to walk this road alone. Reach out to the people who love you, whether it’s family, friends, or a community that understands loss.
3. Honor Their Memory
Keeping Genetta’s memory alive has helped me find peace in the loss. Whether it’s talking about her, celebrating her favorite things, or making Love you, mean it a continued part of Rest Mama, I know she is still with me in every way that matters.
4. Take Care of Yourself
Grief is exhausting—emotionally, mentally, and physically. It’s easy to neglect yourself in the process but rest, nourishment, and self-care are essential. Be gentle with yourself, just as your loved one would want for you.
5. Find a Creative Outlet
For me, this podcast episode was a way to channel my emotions into something meaningful. Whether it’s writing, painting, music, or storytelling, creative expression can be a powerful tool in healing.
A Letter to Genetta
I closed the episode with a personal message to Genetta, and I want to share a part of it here:
"Genetta, my beautiful friend, you are missed more than words can ever express. Thank you for the laughter, the wisdom, and the unwavering love. Thank you for being the kind of friend who made life brighter. Your voice, your presence, your love—it’s all still here, woven into every part of me. I will carry your love always. Love you, mean it."
Finding Love in the Loss
Grief is the price we pay for love. But even in the midst of loss, love remains. I hope this episode serves as a reminder that even when our loved ones are no longer physically here, they are never truly gone. They live in our hearts, in our stories, in the love we continue to share.
